I have been slowly edging my way back into the Scottish comedy scene as Nob Stewart and saw a night advertised called Chunkxmas which was the Xmas version of the regular night, Chunks.

It is a unique kind of a night which is made up of film, sketches and off the wall comedy skits all lasting no more than 3 minutes before the next act is swiftly introduced.

I applied for a spot for Nob to do a poem and was accepted. The guy who ran it saw Nob do a spot at The Halt Bar about 4 years ago where he left a bit of an ‘impression’ so I think that helped to get a spot.

The gig was at McPhabbs quite far from Glasgow Queen Street so I got there quite early and walked for about 40 minutes to get there, taking a photo of this cat mural on the way.

I also passed a Billboard for Aidan Moffat & RM Hubbert’s new album, Ghost Stories For Christmas, which I highly recommend.

When I got to McPhabbs I wasn’t feeling too good but decided to go ahead and go into the venue to do the gig but it turns out that the venue was double booked and I was told that it was now in YesBar which is basically 30 minutes walk back from where I had just come from, oh joy.

When I got there I spotted this rather cool portrait of Rabbie Burns.

Then it was on with the Show. The main promoter and compere had a really cool sort of anarchic demeanor steeped in sarcasm which was very clever and funny.

Paul McDaniel was also involved quite heavily with the group and he done a great rendition of Driving Home For Xmas by Chris Rea.

Richard Duffy’s skit was about how every day was Christmas for him and he even has a facebook page for it called Christmas Fundamentalism.

Chris Thorburn done a lively spot as Santana Claus.

I had a nice wee chat with Jim ‘The Hobbit’ before the show and I discovered we have very similar music tastes and he was surprised not only that I had heard of Caravan, who made his favourite album ‘In The Land of Grey and Pink’, but that I had also been to see them live in Glasgow.

Jim’s performances are never less than inspired (by something) and this one was no different. Once seen never forgotten.

Nob done his wee poem in the middle of all this and if he was feeling a bit better he may have done something more off the wall but just stuck to the plan instead and although he felt it wasn’t really a good fit for the night he done his spot with no major fuck ups so he was happy enough with that.

Here are some highlights of the evening although I didn’t capture my favourite skit which involved Danny Carr and his comedic partner with a brutally honest Psychologist who told the client to just ‘man up’.

If Nob asks for a spot there again at least he will have an idea of what to expect the next time but the organiser did say he was welcome back, whether he was being patronising or not, I’m not too sure.
