Imogen Stirling is an award winning performance poet, theatre maker and musician and she started a new poetry evening at the Soul Food Kitchen in Glasgow, called Soul Food Poetry. I think possibly named after the venue but I can’t be sure.

I applied for a spot at it and was too late for the first one but she duly got back in contact with me for the second one which I was happy to accept.

I didn’t tell her until I turned up that it would be Nob performing but she was 100% fine with that which was cool.

I got changed into my costume and hid on some stairs so I could only listen to the first two poets, Jen Hughes and Tawnya Selene Renelle but as Jen used the C word and Tawnya had adult themes in her poems, the stage was well set for Nob to strut his stuff and he went down pretty well so I was pleased with that.

After the break we had Carolyn Paterson who hails from Falkirk had a good old rant about America which went down well and then a poem about the difficulties of looking for a job in the current climate, you can also see Jen in the photo below.

Then Lindsey McGhie was a very engaging performer and has a hard time not speaking up for the oppressed and got a reputation as a Troublemaker for doing so. Not a bad thing in my book.

Megan Hatton rounded off the guest spots in fine style despite being a little nervous but I think the Wine helped her push through that. I particularly enjoyed her second poem as it resonated with my view that Politics is a fucking sham and that life is just one big letdown. You go girl.

Imogen then recited a poem to finish off the evening and of course, that was very well received and indeed all the performers were really good.

Quite a few people in the audience told me that although they had never been to a poetry night before they loved it and intend to come back.

You can see Imogen and the 3 poets who were on in the second half perform in the slideshow below. Some people were eating and chatting away in the background so I hope it doesn’t spoil your enjoyment of their performances.
