I went to see Emmylou Harris the night Scotland were playing Netherlands in the second leg of a Euro play off and all of my friends are family were going to the pub, especially as Scotland won the first leg 1-0. At the start of the gig Emmylou said she would keep us informed of the score, but then never mentioned it again. It was only when I got back to the car, I heard they lost 6-0. I made the right choice to go to the gig and I always said, her voice was in the top three female voices I have heard live. Sinead O’Connor and Barb Jungr being the other two.

I knew Emma would enjoy seeing her but she was a little shocked to get a ticket as a Christmas present. I would have took her anyway so it killed two birds with one stone. The support was Jim Lauderdale.

I first saw Emmylou at the Armadillo, in fact I saw her there twice as she was part of a night with Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, Elvis Costello and John Prine doing a charity show. Emmylou told a story about the Glasgow Apollo and I think she was maybe saying how good that was compared to The Emirates velodrome, the air hanger she was now playing. We were sitting in the stands way at the back and they left the lights on there for the whole gig. Probably a safety reason but still, it killed the ambience. I just closed my eyes for most of the gig and Emmylou was fantastic.
