Deadletter – Art School – Glasgow

I have to give Emma credit for this one as she discovered Deadletter on Spotify and I think she may have even paid for the tickets!!

Here is a quick intro.

Deadletter are a six-piece post-punk band originally from Yorkshire, now based in South London. They released their second album Existence Is Bliss earlier this year on SO Recordings and this Glasgow School of Art gig was part of the UK tour to support it. Their sound has been compared to The Fall and Gang of Four, but the thing that really sets them apart is the saxophone — it gives everything a jazzy, chaotic edge.

The support act was from London and called Ry-Guy. Good energy and a decent warm-up for the main event.

Deadletter played a great set. Frontman Zak Lawrence was electric — proper stage presence with a bit of Iggy Pop about him, throwing himself around and jumping right into the crowd at one point. Nathan Pigott on saxophone added a whole other dimension to the live sound. Tracks like Mere Mortal and Binge had the place moving.

Another great gig in the bag. If you have not checked out Deadletter yet, start with the new album Existence Is Bliss — it is one of the best post-punk records to come out this year. Catch them live if you can, they are well worth it.
