The first two years of the apprenticeship were mainly at college but in the third year, I started working in the factory itself, doing the same job as Homer Simpson. That’s when my drinking started getting really out of control. We were to start working shifts and there was a shift team on the Ethanol plant, that the whole factory knew about because they were nuts. Nuts in a good way.
For instance, every day when the clock hit 5:25 am or pm, in unison they would all shout out, ‘Pappy pay pa pive, Pappy pay pa pive’, in funny voices for the rest of the minute, until the clock hit 5:26, and then they would stop instantly and go and get changed, cause the twelve hour shift finished at six but the next team would start to arrive around 5.30. Hence the excitement.
All the apprentices wanted to work on that shift team as the other ones in the factory were filled with grumpy old cunts. We were given a project to do on that plant and I put every ounce of effort into it, hoping it would affect the decision of who worked with them and indeed it did.
As I got the best score, I got put on shift with them. Just shows you what you can do if you care about something enough.
Cheers!
