After taking my son to a Heavy Metal Surprise Gig his next gig of interest was August Burns Red at The Garage in Glasgow.

Being the ‘good Dad’ that I am, I was obligated to take him to it and so after a few shifts in the food factory I purchased the tickets for some more voluntary ear bleeding.

On the way to Sauchihall Street we passed The State Bar which brought back a lot of memories for me as I performed there about 10 times many years ago when I was first starting out in comedy.

Unfortunately the side door down to the basement was locked so I couldn’t take the boy down to show him the scene but here is a blurry photo taken from an old video I have of me strutting my stuff.

Much like now I really didn’t have much of a clue as to what I was doing but it was exciting to do it anyway.

After the nostalgia it was time to hit The Garage.

I had some more memories come up while in there as I have seen
The Coral, Jeff Buckley and Drugstore as well as some more that don’t readily spring to mind in there but I will never forget my close encounter with Skin who was the singer in Skunk Anansie and who were supporting Veruca Salt.

They were unheard of at the time and Skin was quite the full on performer and not a little scary. While I was watching them there was an asshole in the crowd who kept bumping into me and Skin actually said something to him to get him to calm down.

Then later, when Veruca Salt were on I looked to my side and Skin was beside me and so I put my arm around her and jumped up and down with her. My friends who were stood behind me couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

I often regret not asking her out as I am sure we would have made a good couple, as long as I could tolerate her lesbian lovers from time to time. I am sure it wouldn’t have been a problem.

During the Drugstore gig I asked the lead singer, Isabella, to Marry me, which got a good laugh. Afterwards I tried to talk to her but I was way too drunk and her bodyguard cut me off mid-chat up. Another one bites the dust.

On to tonights gig and there were 2 support band, the first one Betraying The Martyrs were from France and the lead singer was quite charasmatic and got everyone to put up the Scottish version of the ‘Devil Horns’ which he referred to a our ‘Square Sausages’.

The second support band were Wage War and their main singer was the typical Heavy Metal growler but one of their guitarists helped out on vocals from time to time and his voice was really beautiful, so it was quite a good mix.

Then it was time for August Burns Red to come on and tear the place up which they duly did, which brought a big smile to my sons face despite him still getting over his botched haircut from a few days previous.

At the end of the gig their Drummer came down the front and I saw him handing out one of his drumsticks but still holding onto the other so I shoved my boy forward for him to get one although he didn’t hear my instruction to do so, but he was too awestruck to think of it himself didn’t even ask for it.

Afterwards he said to me, ‘I should have asked for the spare drumstick’. Aye, son. Aye.

I then spotted the singer, Jake Luhrs, down the front of the other side of the stage so I took my son over to meet him and told him that my son brought me here and that he had good taste.

Jake thanked my son for bringing me along but after the photo all my son could care about was how bad his hair looked in it. Pool lad.

Then it was time to head home with a nice goodbye message from the Garage on the way out.
