I managed to get a spot for Nob Stewart on Bad Apple Comedy Club which is run by Graeme Lees and held at Monty’s Bar in Dunfermline.
On arriving I made a quick video on my Mobile to give you a flavour of the pub and where it is located.
My Heavy Metal loving son would have been very impressed with the bar for not only the decor, but also the fact that they played full on Hard/Black/Death metal. I am not sure exactly which one when though, as they all blend into one big noise for me.
The compere for the evening was Michael Welch who has only being doing comedy for just over a year but was doing quite well to deal with a couple of dudes in the bar who were enjoying what they perceived as the the ‘voluntary participation’ element of the show.
However, things took a turn for the worse when another guy who let’s just say, was a little worse for wear, proceeded to join Michael on the stage and proceeded to just stand beside him giving no rhyme or reason for his being there.
This got Michael a little nervous and he was happy when he left the stage but only to turn around and climb back on it again! Eventually a bouncer, the bar owner and another lady managed to convince him to leave without resorting to GBH.
Michael then downed the rest of his pint, which was only half full but was the start of more spectacular things to come.
Matt Watson was invited to the stage to clean up the carnage and he certainly done a good job of winning over the crowd and getting them in the mood for the rest of the evening.
When Michael came back on he was encouraged to down a full pint of lager which he did with aplomb. The audience were sensing blood now and got him to down another.
Next up was Heather Ross who along with Matt was brought up in Canada although she was born in Aberdeen. She was very good too and her material was very well crafted.
On Michael’s returning to the stage I think another beer got sunk as he boasted that at least his University years didn’t go to waste.
It was certainly an interesting side element to the evenings entertainment to see how many pints the audience could get this young man to sink without falling over.
The organiser of the evening and a local of Dunfermline, although he now lives in Glenrothes, was Graeme and he was doing quite well before I decided to go to the toilet to get changed into Nob gear.
While in there I heard quite a few big laughs from the audience and during the interval people were talking to him about how much they enjoyed his set and specific jokes within it, so he no doubt left an impression.
First up after the break was Angus Coutts who hails from Inverness originally and who again, has only been doing comedy for just over a year but again, done really well. Graeme mentioned to me afterwards that he saw him about 6 months ago and the improvement was dramatic.
Michael was fairly blitzed by this time and after Nob done his skit, he proceeded to take umbrage with certain elements of Nobs set and called him a Rob Roy Chubby Brown act, although afterwards he came up to me and apologised profusely.
I didn’t hold any grudges against him for it and we had a good chinwag while the Headliner Martin Bearne was doing his set and going by the laughs I heard in background went down rather well.
Overall the night was a big success and the audience members were very complimentary to the acts afterwards and gave special thanks to Greame for organising a great night in the excellent venue.
I got chatting to a few people myself, including one of the regulars to the bar Dave, pictured below, and would certainly recommend any comedians to go to Monty’s as they were a great crowd.
When I got outside the venue I saw this painting directly outside the venue which reminded me of Dave although I am assuming it was just a coincidence.
