Last night there was a football match
A world cup qualifying playoff no less
It seems to have caused many people
A great deal of anger and emotional distress

The game was between Ireland and France
The travelling Irish lost the first-leg one nil
Many people thought that the tie was over
The task for Ireland was now steeply uphill

The French hardly ever lose in Stade de France
Now I think we know the reason why
France as a nation has many people
Therefore, the normal rules of football don’t apply

The governing bodies of any sport
Are corporations designed to make cash
If you were a market stall holder
Where would you want to sell your stash?

At a crowded venue to a wealthy crowd
Or at a jumble sale at the Parish Church?
So should we blame the businessmen
For ensuring the Irish were left in the lurch?

They do all they can to maximise their profits
The shareholders indeed demand it
That is why the teams in the draw were seeded
So that the smaller nations would submit

They like to kid us on that the world of sport is fair
That they come down heavily on any cheat
But if they used the latest technology
They could solve any problem with a ten second repeat

For those of you that don’t know what happened
The Irish scored to take the game to extra time
When Thierry Henry handled the ball
Before committing the world’s biggest crime

He passed the ball to a teammate
Who headed it into an empty net
You could tell from the Irish players reaction
That they were understandably upset

The referee allowed the goal to stand
As did the assistant and the fourth official
After all, for their refereeing careers
This could only be beneficial

But would the Irish have complained so much
If the boot was on the other foot
I think after celebrating the goal
They too would have gone suddenly mute

Because sport isn’t about playing fair
There is too much money at stake
Don’t forget about player endorsements
It’s not only corporations that are on the make

It’s the supporters I feel sorry for
The ones who are conned into thinking
That football actually means something
When it’s really just an excuse to go drinking
Just as well that alcohol companies
Are allowed to advertise on football shirts
They can sway any less talented youngsters
Into mindless patriotic beer guzzling converts

We shouldn’t compete with each other as nations
Although yes, people are naturally tribal
That’s why most of you reading this
Will probably accuse me of libel

You are dyed in the wool blind fools
Even worse than the bought referee
Why can’t you see that you’re just a pawn
Being used in a game of the bourgeoisie?

Fuck football and fuck theWorld Cup
It serves no useful purpose at all
There are many more important things to save
Than the kicking of a FIFA ball

But for the next god knows how long
We will have to listen to supporters
Bleat on about the terrible injustice
To provide good stories for reporters

Who will then sell the illusion back to you
So they can make money from the game
It’s funny how it always comes back to
The story just being the same old same

When are we going to wake up
And stop going along with their plan?
Or are we all far too entrenched now
To even consider sticking it to ‘the man’?

Cheers!
