The night after Molly Sarle I took my son along to the same venue in Glasgow called Broadcast. The support act was called Egopatterns.

One of the pleasures of running BillyWatson.tv is stumbling across bands that don’t fit neatly into any category. Sometimes you hear a track, become intrigued and decide the only sensible thing to do is see them live. That’s how I ended up checking out Föllakzoid and played most of the gig in the dark which very much suited their music.

Hailing from Chile, Föllakzoid have built a loyal following by creating music that’s less about conventional songs and more about atmosphere, rhythm and repetition. Drawing inspiration from psychedelic rock, krautrock and electronic music, they specialise in long, hypnotic pieces that gradually pull the audience into their world. It’s music that asks you to stop checking your watch and simply go along for the ride.

The visual side of the performance was every bit as important as the music. The band spent much of the evening performing in near darkness, which suited the material perfectly. Rather than focusing attention on individual musicians, the emphasis was placed firmly on the sound itself. The result felt immersive, almost trance-like at times, and completely different from the average rock concert.

Not every gig needs singalong choruses or elaborate stage banter. Sometimes it’s enough to create a mood and let the audience disappear into it for an hour or two. Föllakzoid managed exactly that, delivering a performance that was as much an experience as it was a concert.

The videos and photographs below should give you a flavour of what the evening was like, although, as anyone who was there will tell you, some things are best experienced in person.

Here are the mobiles.
