One of the things I enjoy most about live music is discovering artists I probably wouldn’t have come across otherwise. Sometimes you’re actively searching for a gig, spot a name you don’t recognise, do a bit of digging and before you know it you’ve bought a ticket. That’s exactly how I ended up at this show featuring Molly Sarlé and support act Amie Huckstep.

I first checked out Molly’s music online and immediately liked what I heard. Then I looked up some of Amie’s videos and that was enough to seal the deal. One of the benefits of getting to gigs early is that support acts often become one of the highlights of the evening, and Amie certainly made an impression.

Her performance had the sort of honesty and warmth that immediately grabs your attention, and afterwards she was kind enough to sit down for an interview, which you can watch below.

Molly Sarlé first came to wider attention as a member of the acclaimed folk trio Mountain Man, but her solo work has a character all of its own. Stripped back, intimate and beautifully atmospheric, her songs draw listeners in rather than demanding attention. It’s the kind of music that works best in a live setting where every lyric and subtle vocal nuance has room to breathe.

By the time Molly took to the stage, the audience was fully invested. Watching artists at this stage of their career is always interesting because you get the feeling you’re seeing something genuine and unfiltered. There are no distractions, no unnecessary production tricks—just songs, stories and a connection between performer and audience.

After the show I tried my luck and asked Molly if she fancied doing an interview as well. Unfortunately she was understandably exhausted after the performance, so I had to settle for a photograph and a signed CD instead. You can’t win them all.

The videos below capture both artists on a memorable evening and serve as a reminder that some of the best nights out start with nothing more than a bit of curiosity and a willingness to take a chance on someone you’ve never heard before.
