One year my mother bought me a suit to wear for the apprentice Christmas dance. It was my first suit and although it was a bit boring for my tastes, I livened it up with a silly tie.
I can’t remember too much about the dance because I got totally shit faced, so much so that for some reason I decided to get off the bus home too early.
Once off the bus I realised that I would have to walk a long way around a field or cut across it. I think because I was due to get up at 5 am because I was the only apprentice who was working with my shift team the next day, I decided to take the short cut.
Next thing I know I am rolling around in six feet high bramble bushes and my new suit it is getting snags all over it.
Dave tried to batter my door down to wake me up but my stereo was set at full volume and that wasn’t doing the job, so his knocking made no difference. I heard the din at around 7 am and quickly arranged a taxi.
When I got to the control room, I was still drunk and was telling the team of my vague memory of the bramble bush and only then realised that the back of my legs were covered in scratches.
I don’t know if they were genuinely trying to help or just thought it would be a good laugh, but the team suggested I rub ethanol into them. They certainly had a good laugh when I nearly hit the ceiling after doing so.
I was then sent to the lab to sleep off my oncoming hangover for most of the day. They did look after me well, all in all. I think they appreciated the entertainment value I brought to the team with my tales of drunken escapades.
Cheers!
