Mind you, that is becoming the norm in Edinburgh now and not just during the festival, what with lots of English selling their London flat and buying a mansion in Scotland with the
equity.
During the festival there are lots of English middle class students called Beatrice and Nigel shoving flyers in your hand all down the Royal Mile which really pisses me off. Maybe I’m just jealous of their sunny disposition and enthusiastic optimism for getting people into their show.
The reason I asked though, is because I find English people a little bit irritating. Actually, that’s not fair….I find them highly irritating. Let me explain why.
I used to try to sell property in Turkey in 2008 when Gordon Brown was the British Prime Minister, even though no-one voted for him! Nice work if you can get it.
I would meet our potential English customers at the airport and would greet them as they came out of the terminal building by saying something like, “Hello Mr & Mrs Jones, welcome to Turkey”.
They would all say exactly the same thing, “You’re Scottish”.
I would be like, “Aye, that’s right”.
They would say, “Huh, well Gordon Brown’s Scottish”.
“Aye, and….?”
“Well, we don’t like Gordon Brown”.
That would put me on the back foot, so I’d retort,
“Aye? Well don’t hold that against me, Thatcher was English, you fucking started the shit show!”
