Within six weeks of buying a bass guitar, I played a gig. Fuck knows how I got through this one. Another seat of the pants job.

I knew my friend had talent and he said I should play bass and my other friend who he had saw hitting his steering wheel in a drumming fashion would play drums.

With that we entered a ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition. We had sixteen weeks to prepare but it took me until six weeks before the gig to buy the bass guitar, after we went and watched another heat and realised we had better pull the finger out big time.

My friend taught me the most basic bass lines ever and we rehearsed a few times a week. In rehearsal sometimes we sounded totally fucking awesome but still, I had never been so nervous as before that gig.

I played the whole thing with my kneecaps bouncing faster than a jack hammer and amazingly we pulled it off. Our set list was I Wanna Be Your Dog, Good For My Soul, Waiting for my Man and Roadrunner, with my friend playing one of his songs in the middle. For the last two songs we had no set ending and just kept going until somehow, we instinctively stopped at the same time.

We never qualified from the heat, but we never made total tits of ourselves, and I thought my path to super-stardom was well and truly on its way. Needless to say, it wasn’t.

Cheers!
