When I arrived and met Robin he didn’t recognise me at first as I had shorter hair and no beard the last time he saw me which was at a Glasgow Slam event I performed at in 2014, which he also hosted.
Robin is well known in the Spoken Word scene in Scotland and he does a great job of hosting these events and we also get the pleasure of hearing him perform a couple of pieces of his own as well as his humorous banter between the acts.
Instead of having everyone compete on an individual level, Robin broke the 12 poets down to 3 teams of 4 and the top 2 teams would go through to the final.
An individual winner with the top marks on the judges scorecards would then qualify to enter the Scottish Slam Poet of the Year competition.
I was performing as Nob Stewart and he was in a team with Andy Judge and Grey Crosbie and I came up with our team name, The Scallywags.
Oliver Pissed who runs and hosts the Clusterfuck Circus gigs was in the winning team and he was the only one to score a 9 from the audience.
There were two other judges that evening, one of whom is Gayle Smith, whom I remember from many moons ago from performing on the circuit before I moved to Turkey.
The winning team were called The Flash Gordons and consisted of Oliver and Gordon Powrie, as well as the overall individual winner Alex Frew.
I think Alex was a bit shocked to have won but it was well deserved and no-one could complain about the judges scoring overall and Oliver certainly wasn’t stopping to ask questions.
Here is a selection of some of the poets who were happy to let me film and post their performance.
The Photos
After the show I went across the street to Guitar Guitar and bought my son a Steve Vai Wah Wah pedal, so when I got home at least I was a champion in his eyes.
Cheers!
