I have been asked to write a poem
About something I knew nothing about
So done a five minute google search
And now I am free of doubt

I was asked to write about memes
Which are like snippets of information
That are copied from person to person
So they can influence the next generation

Like anything on this groundhog day planet
They do all they can to survive
Like rednecks who don’t take precautions
They are a virus that just wants to thrive

So for instance I just gave you an example
Of one of the most destructive
As a novice I proclaimed myself a expert
I do it in a bid to be constructive

This one gets passed on in conversation
Especially after a few beers
People will argue until they are blue in the face
Instead of stopping and facing their fears

We are trained to think we know it all
We should get honorary degrees in arrogance
But none of us ask why we do what we do
Because that would reveal our ignorance

Every day we go round in circles
Doing the things that we’ve always done

Some memes tell us to enjoy ourselves
By drinking ourselves into oblivion

Other memes tell us that religion will save us
From having to stop and take responsibility
If we just say sorry to an imaginary being
We can continue demonstrating hostility

Even if we know we are in their grip
We feel powerless to do anything about it
I myself eat four bars of chocolate a day
Because no-one these days is fit

Some memes can be good for us though
Like writing poetry to share a thought
That is much better than the bad ones
Like having our consciousness wrought

Perhaps we could understand ourselves more
If we spent some time in isolation
Then we wouldn’t pick up any bad habits
As we learn to tune into our own unique station

We would then be free to live our lives
As a series of fantastical dreams
Each day different from the last
In a world of zero memes

Cheers!
